Lion | Count On Me Elective Adventure

The Count On Me adventure is an elective activity for Lion Cub Scouts (Kindergarten). This is a fun adventure where scouts will get to explore shapes and then use them in arts and crafts projects.

Activities with an asterisks (*) are found via the QR codes in the Lion Adult Partner Handbook and Lion Cub Scout Handbook.

Requirement 1 | Shapes

Make a Lion using only squares, triangles, and circles.

Choose at least one activity from the following:

Activity | Clay Lion*

This activity is fun and straight forward for for little hands who love to create. The den leader will have to prep a little. Aside from preparing the supplies the guide also suggests pre-making a sample lion, so you know which areas of the build may be troubling for scouts.

Most scouts will have no problem working with the Playdoh-like material however, ensuring they only use the specific shapes may be more challenging. In fact,

3 oz. of air-dry clay for each Cub Scout and adult partner
- Budget-Friendly Option: Use Play-doh instead, as you can reuse the ‘doh in the future. And, the canister will work for the circle “cookie cutter”
- Another easy to use option is Model Magic. This is much easier to use than clay for young hands and is pre-portioned into 1oz. packages.
Plastic knife, one for each Cub Scout and adult partner
2” round cookie cutters, one for each Cub Scout and adult partner
Small rolling pins, one for each Cub Scout and adult partner
Toothpicks, enough to share

Directions

Have scouts and partners look at the template guide in the handbook. Instruct them to use only to use squares, triangle and circles to make their lion. It does not have to be the one from the guide book but it can be.

Activity | Stencil Lion*

Low prep activity using stencils to draw lions

Supplies

Stencil Set
Blank paper
Pencils, crayons, markers, etc.

Directions

Use stencils to create lions. The geometric lion in the Lion Handbook can be used as a guide.

Activity | Triangles, Circles and Squares Oh My!*

This is the least prep as scouts and partners cut the shapes directly out of the Lion Handbook and tape them together.

Requirement 2 | Counting & Numbers

Play a game with your Lion adult partner or den that is based on counting or numbers.

Choose at least one activity from the following:

Activity | Hop to it Lion*

Low prep easy activity. Use sidewalk chalk to mark off a hopscotch court. Any small heavy item will work well as the toss item – a stone, keys, hack sack ball, etc.

Activity | Lion Dominos*

Play a simplified game of dominos. The player that goes out first collects all points of the dominos remaining in the other players’ hands. Play to 100.

You’ll need one double-six set per eight players.

Activity | Lions, Dimes, Nickels, and Pennies*

This is a relay game that requires counting change. It is very common that kindergartners will not yet have this skill and will require participation from their adult partner.

Activity | Feed the Lion Relay

This game is a fun way to practice counting and number recognition and you can adjust the difficulty by changing the number of food cards used each time or introducing a game variation.

Supplies:

2 Copies of the Lion page with the black mouth area cut away
4 copies of the food card page, cut a part
Two small bowls or plates
Optional: Tape

Gameplay:

This is a cooperative or competitive game (depending how you choose to play) where children work together or in teams to find food for hungry lions. Players race around a designated area to find food cards scattered on the floor, then bring them back to pictures of lions to “feed” them. The first team (or all players working together) to gather a set amount of food wins the game. There are also variations that involve sorting food by type or hiding the food cards for a treasure hunt element.

Requirement 3 | Sorting

Organize a group of items based on shape, then based on color, and one other category.  Count how many different shapes are in each category.  After organizing them build anything using only one category.

Easy low prep activity where scouts use Legos or other building blocks to sort, categorize, and build.

Completing the Count On Me Adventure

Congratulations you completed the Count On Me adventure! Don’t forget to mark off the Adventure on the Trail Map and Adventure Tracking page. If you did not complete this with your den tell your den leader so they can mark the completion in Scoutbook and your Lion will be awarded his or her adventure belt loop soon after.
